NOTES ON BALDWIN FAMILY OF CORK CURRAVODY AND MT PLEASANT'……….. ELIZABETH BALDWIN married PHILIP HAWES CROSS of SHANDY HALL ,CORK in 1716. They were my 5x great grandparents. HENRY BALDWIN, born 1676 in Curravody, Mt Pleasant .Cork married JOHANNE FIELD TRAVERS in 1695, daughter of WILLIAM FIELD and SUSANNAH BEECHER. Henry was the father of Elizabeth Baldwin, who, in turn was the 3x great grandmother of RICHARD HENRY RADLEY. The children of HENRY BALDWIN and JOHANNE FIELD TRAVERS are as follows……..Henry, William, ELIZABETH, Sara, Anna, Joanna and Mary. HENRY BALDWIN, the son, married Alicia WARREN, 1728. One of his children was Alicia Baldwin who married Rev JOHN MADRAS. JOHN MADRAS, son of Madras of Amsterdown, was ordained French minister in 1735 and held that post till his death1773. In 1740 he was appointed chaplain to the Earl of Kingston and in 1745 was created Procentor of Ross. He is buried in the French church (My 4xgreat grandfather, JULIUS BESNARD, is credited with starting that French church) These Anglo/Irish families are all related This anecdote about BALDWINS is taken from Rosemary Ffolliotts IRISH ANCESTOR. FRANCES FFOLLIOTT MD married Eva Catherine, daughter of JOHN BALDWIN of Skibbereen 1849. His son Francis wrote "My grandfather had been attending Baldwins for years and my father saved the life of my grandmother, Mrs Baldwin, and also my mother. She was, (my mother) I believe, considered to be the most beautiful woman in the county, but she was very proud and overbearing and I think, generally disliked. THERE IS NO FAMILY I HAVE EVER COME ACROSS PROUDER OF THEIR PEDIGREE, THAN THE BALDWINS. They had often said that the Ffolliotts were a respectable enough family, but they should never have presumed to ask for the hand of a Baldwin!! Further notes on BALDWINS of Cork HISTORY OF BANDON Chapter 22…BANDON MILITIA OR SOUTH CORK LIGHT INFANTRY. These are notes credited to the above. BALDWIN, Walter Junior, son of Walter Baldwin of Granahoonik. Mentioned in the report addressed to the Court of Claims. Under the Act of Settlement, he obtained part of the lands of Knocknough and Kilbolane. Walter Baldwin the elder, was the son of Herbert, and grandson of Henry, the eldest of 3 brothers who settled here toward the close of Elizabeth's reign. This Henry was the son of Henry, ranger of woods and forests in Shropshire, who married Elinor Herbert, daughter of Sir Edward Herbert of Red Castle, who was the 2nd son of the first Lord Pembroke. By Lady Anne, daughter of Lord Parr, of Kendall, and sister of Lady Catherine Parr, surviving Queen of Henry VIII. Walter Baldwin was succeeded by his son Henry, who married Miss Field, niece of Colonel Beecher of Sherkin. He was succeeded by his son Henry (who married Elizabeth, daughter of Dive Downes, bishop of Cork) by his 3rd wife Elizabeth, daughter of Thomas Beecher of Sherkin and relict of Capt Townsend. Henry had two sons, Henry, progenitor of the Baldwins of Mount Pleasant and William, B.L.progenitor of the Baldwins of Lissarda; the former married Miss Warren, sister of Sir Robert Warren, and the latter Miss French, daughter of Alderman French of Cork. William of Lissarda, who was a very eminent barrister, was succeeded by his son Henry, who married Miss Morris of Dunkettle, and was High Sheriff of the county in 1777. He died, leaving amongst other issue, William who married Mary Kirby, daughter of Franklin Kirby of Bamborough Grange Yorkshire. He was also High Sheriff of the county in 1813. He died in 1838 leaving numerous issue. THE BALDWINS CLAIM DESCENT FROM BAUDWIN (OR BALDWIN) BRAS DE FER, A FRENCH NOBLEMAN ATTACHED TO THE COURT OF CHARLES THE BOLD, BY WHOM HE WAS CREATED EARL OF FLANDERS. HE MARRIED JUDITH, CHARLES' DAUGHTER, AND GREAT GRAND- DAUGHTER OF CHARLMAGNE. SHE WAS WIDOW OF ETHELWOLF, KING OF ENGLAND AND STEPMOTHER OF ALFRED THE GREAT. Further note on BALDWINS…………JOHANNE FIELD, was a niece of COL.THOMAS BECHER/BEECHER. This would likely make SUSANNAH BECHER/BEECHER, married to WILLIAM FIELD, the sister of Col THOMAS BECHER/BEECHER. |

Notes on origin of BALDWINS. Taken from sources. History of Bandon, Pooles of mayfield etc. Elizabeth Herbert of Powys. was the granddaughter of Ann Parr who was married to William Herbert. Ann was the sister of Catherine Parr, the 6th wife of Henry VIII. Anne was 4th cousin to Henry VIII and, being descended from John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, Son of Edward III. ( More complete details from History Bandon and Pooles of Mayfield) THE first Baldwin was William, ranger of the Royal Forests in Shropshire. He married Elinor, daughter of Sir Edward Herbert of Powis. William came to Ireland with his two sons and Walter, the elder settled at Mt Pleasant. Thomas, the younger lived at Lisnagatt. My 5xgt grandparents were ELIZABETH BALDWIN of Mt Pleasant married to PHILIP HAWES CROSS. Of Shandy Hall. BALDWIN LINEAGE is as follows………… |

FURTHER NOTES ON SIR WILLIAM HERBERT. SIR WILLIAM HERBERT was appointed second gentleman of the Privy Chamber to Henry VIII in1546. Sir William was the brother in law of Queen Catherine Parr When Henry died in1547. a bizarre clause in his will allowed for the posthumous bestowal of unspecified gifts that Henry had alledgedly” promised”.. Paget,. Denny and Herbert swore that they had been made privy to the King’s intentions and at the beginning of February they drew up a book specifying his “unfulfilled gifts”. They consisted of peerages and cash legacies. |

ELINOR HERBERT who married WILLIAM BALDWIN, ranger of Royal Forests. BURKES GENEALOGICAL AND HERALDIC DICTIONERY 1862 , does say that “a daughter of Sir Edward Herbert married William Baldwin” Baldwins also quarter Herbert Arms. It may be that Elinor was illegitimate, but as she had the blood line, they married her to a person who was not titled, but high up on social scale. Open to correction., if anyone knows more. |
POSSIBLE ORIGIN OF WILLIAM BALDWIN, RANGER OF ROYAL FOREST, SALOP……. SOURCE History of County Shropshire, MUNSLOW VOL 10. In 1428 WILL BAUDEWYN (fl1422) was listed with William Burley, Lord Furnivalle as a principal landowner. He was a Munslow Freeholder, as were his descendents until 18th century. One of them RICHARD BALDWIN (fl1523) was ancestor of Earl Baldwin of Bewdley, prime minister 1923/4, 1924/9 1935/7. A chief house that belonged to JOHN BALDWIN (died 1605) passed to his son William (fl 1620) was possibly “FARM OF MUNSLOW” that Roger Baldwin, John’s uncle, had bought from JOHN STRINGFELLOW (purchaser of a moiety of the manor) in 1553 for Pemberton, was later called the OLD SCHOOLHOUSE” In the 16th century, there was only 404 people in this area, so it would seem possible that WILLIAM BALDWIN , ranger of Salop, was one of these Baldwins.Nothing proven. |
MAUD PARR, cousin to ANNE PARR (LADY HERBERT) wife of WILLIAM HERBERT, EARL OF PEMBROKE, AND KATHERINE PARR , WIFE OF HENRY VIII. Katherine and Anne were the daughters of Sir Thomas Parr, a descendent of Edward III, and Maud Green, daughter of Sir Thomas Green. In 1543 , Katherine married Henry VIII. She used her position as queen to advance her family in the acquisition of wealth and status. MAUD PARR LANE, her cousin was , on death of her husband SIR RALPH LANE, brought into the royal household, and was known as Lady Lane. Her father was Sir William Parr, brother of Thomas and her mother was Mary Salisbury. Katherine and her ladies became active in promoting Protestant religion. Members of the court persuaded Henry that Katherine and her ladies were plotting to change the Roman Catholic religion to Protestant. The arrests of ANNE (LADY HERBERT) LADY LANE AND LADY TYRWITT ,were ordered. Henry was finally persuaded.that the ladies were innocent of the charges. Today many of Sir Ralph Lane’s descendents live in America. |

INTERESTING ANECDOTE REGARDING LORD STANLEY Who belonged to STANLEYS of DALGARETH, an ancestor of Mary Stanley who married Sir Edward Herbert of Powys, who was reputedly ancestor of BALDWIN s of CURRAVODY AND MT PLEASANT. Source GREAT TALES FROM ENGLISH HISTORY by Robert Lacey. Battle of Bosworth between Richard III and Henry Tudor ( later Henry VII) 1485. Henry Tudor had been counting on support of Thomas, Lord Stanley. Richard III had seized Stanley’s son and held him hostage Richard clad himself in kingly armour, setting the gold circlet of the crown over his helmet. “This day I will die as a king, or win”’ Richard’s cavalary charged, but was repelled by French pikemen. The king was unhorsed. Sir William Stanley moved his troops across, overpowering the King. Richard fought very bravely, refusing an offer of a horse, to enable him to flee. He fought to the last and the circlet of gold rolled off his helmet. SIR WILLIAM STANLEY picked it up and placed it on Henry Tudor’s head. “Sir, here I make you King of England”. |

We can trace back to HENRY BALDWIN, a RANGER OF WOODS AND FORESTS in SHROPSHIRE, who married ELINOR, daughter of SIR EDWARD HERBERT of RED CASTLE, who was second son of the first LORD PEMBROKE by LADY ANNE, daughter of LORD PARR, of KEDALL and sister of LADY CATHERINE PARR (or PAER) surviving queen of Henry VIII, King of England. That HENRY BALDWIN had 3 sons who settled in Ireland in time of Queen Elizabeth, the eldest of whom was Henry |
